In a dense and urban city like Singapore, construction sites are often located in built-up areas surrounded by buildings and other infrastructure. This can make it more challenging for heavy construction machines to work safely. So how can operators stay safe and work efficiently in these busy environments?

To solve this problem, the Cat 2D E-Fence system was created to keep both excavator operators and others safe while increasing work productivity. The system uses onboard GPS and sensors to create virtual boundaries, or “fences”, around the excavator. These boundaries can be set using the excavator's touchscreen. Once the limits are set, the excavator will automatically stop if it tries to move past them, preventing accidents with nearby structures, underground utilities, or restricted areas.

How the Cat 2D E-Fence System Works

The Cat 2D E-Fence system allows operators to set up five different types of virtual boundaries.

1. E-Ceiling – Limits the upward movement of the boom to avoid hitting overhead obstacles, such as ceilings, bridges, or power lines.

2. E-Swing – Restricts the swing range of the excavator to avoid contact with obstacles on either side of the machine.

3. E-Wall – Limits the forward reach of the bucket to prevent accidental contact with structures or objects in front of the machine.

4. E-Floor – Sets a lower limit to prevent the bucket from digging below a specified depth, protecting underground utilities such as pipes and cables.

5. Cab Avoidance – Ensures the bucket does not come into contact with the operator’s cabin, enhancing operator safety.

Applications and Benefits of the Cat E-Fence System

Enhanced Safety

The Cat E-Fence system significantly reduces the risk of accidents by preventing the excavator from moving beyond safe limits. This helps protect the operator, nearby workers, and surrounding infrastructure from potential damage, creating a safer work environment.

Increased Productivity

With reliable safety technology in place, operators can focus on their tasks without the constant worry of hitting surrounding structures. The system minimizes downtime caused by accidents, leading to more efficient operations. Less manpower is needed to keep a lookout or to check the permissible depth dug by the excavator.

Ideal for Compact Construction Projects

In an island city like Singapore, urban construction sites often have limited working zones. The close proximity of workers and heavy machinery can be hazardous. With the E-Swing boundary set, operators can ensure the excavator remains within a designated safe zone, reducing the risk of accidents in these restricted spaces.

Protection of Utilities and Infrastructure

Singapore’s underground is filled with neatly tucked pipes and cables that require regular maintenance. The E-Floor boundary helps operators avoid accidental damage to these underground utilities by stopping the excavator digging at the specified depth. This reduces the need for frequent checks and cuts down on man-hours, improving overall efficiency.

Suitable for Underground or Basement Projects

In a densely populated city, many buildings and infrastructures have basements. The E-Ceiling boundary prevents the excavator from puncturing ceilings, while the E-Swing boundary ensures the machine can work safely in confined spaces. This makes the Cat E-Fence system an essential tool for underground or basement projects.

Working in tight job sites in a crowded city like Singapore requires smart safety tools to prevent accidents and keep things running smoothly. The Cat 2D E-Fence system helps by letting operators set virtual boundaries that control how far the Cat excavator can move. This reduces the chance of damaging nearby buildings, utilities, or people. By making the worksite safer and more productive, the Cat 2D E-Fence system is an important tool for handling tricky urban projects.

The Cat 2D E-Fence system is available on certain Cat excavator models like the Cat 320, Cat 336, Cat 352 and others, so be sure to check if your excavator is compatible.
