Water….everywhere and not a drop to drink…..Singaporeans and those living in the island republic have clean and potable water to consume.  It all boils down to good water management.

PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, has been investing in water technologies and R&D to put in place a diversified and sustainable water supply through its Four National Taps strategy.  The four water resources are water from local catchment areas, imported water, reclaimed water known as NEWater and desalinated water.


The 3rd National Tap – NEWater

NEWater is high-grade reclaimed water, produced from treated used water that is purified further using advanced membrane technologies.    This ensures the water is ultra-clean and safe to drink.   NEWater has undergone more than 65,000 scientific tests and exceeds World Health Organisation requirements.   Because it is ultra-clean, NEWater is ideal for industry use such as wafer fabrication processes, electronics and power generation industries for process use as well as commercial and institutional complexes for airconditioning cooling purposes.   This frees up potable water for domestic use.  PUB also mixes a small percentage of the NEWater with reservoir water.  

To meet growing demand, four NEWater plants have been built since 2003.

Sembcorp Changi NEWater Plant

The Sembcorp Changi NEWater Plant (SCNP), the fifth and largest NEWater plant in Singapore, will be fully completed in mid-2010.

Developed under a 25-year Design-Build-Own-Operate contract awarded to Sembcorp, the 228,000 cubic metre plant will be one of the largest water recycling plants globally.

While PowerGrid provides approximately 10MW of electrical power to run the plant and its equipment from a 22kV consumer  switchroom, Cat® 3516B HD diesel generating sets (supplied by Tractors Singapore Limited, authorized Cat Dealer for Singapore, Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Maldives) are deployed to provide 100% of the backup power for the facility.

Cat 3516B HD (high displacement) , also known as “The Long Stroke,” is a reliable and proven engine.   Caterpillar® has designed it to escalate the engine power output within the same engine block and housing by increasing the stroke/length of the piston and cylinder.   This correspondingly grows the power density of the engine.

Tractors Singapore supplied, installed and commissioned 6 units of Cat 3516B HD diesel generating sets complete with soundproof enclosures and all other essentials.
